MYOFASCIAL RELEASE
We have taken courses from the Upledger Institute (www.upledger.com) and John Barnes (www.myofascialrelease.com). As we have taken these courses, we have increased our appreciation of the
fascial system—the cellular covering—of all our insides, connected in a
spider-web type of supportive structure. We learned that a scar or injury
to a knee can cause back pain, and headaches can come from jaw problems. We learned how to use a gentle approach to our tissues to promote alignment and
postural correction.
Myofascial release is the use of sustained pressure into the fascial system
in order to eliminate any fascial restrictions. First, an assessment is made
using visual evaluation and palpation of the fascial layers. When locating
an area of fascial restriction, the tissue can be approached in a direct or
indirect manner, and relaxation or proper alignment is facilitated. This
therapeutic approach is useful in treating conditions such as musculoskeletal
pain, fibromyalgia, neurological impairment, headaches, and loss of range of
motion.
