Craniosacral Therapy

The craniosacral system consists of the fascial coverings that support the brain in the cranium and cover the spinal cord all the way down to the sacrum. This system influences the development and function of the brain and spinal cord (the central nervous system), and any imbalance in it may affect motor, sensory, and/or cognitive function. This may present as headaches, poor concentration, poor sleep patterns, anxiety, motor impairments, and chronic pain, among other conditions. Craniosacral therapy facilitates the body's innate regulatory systems through a series of manual techniques that incorporate a touch that is equivalent to 5 grams of pressure, roughly the weight of a nickel. By releasing any restrictions that may be in the system, the body is able to resume its naturally balanced craniosacral rhythm and restorative function. Results are often experienced after the first treatment, with subsequent treatments suggested for a more permanent effect. This is often the treatment of choice for clients with chronic headaches or post minor head injury (bumping your head after a fall, car accident, mischief).

According to the Wikipedia Encyclopedia:

Craniosacral therapy (also called CST, cranial osteopathy, also spelled CranioSacral bodywork or therapy) is a method of complementary and alternative medicine used by massage therapists, naturopaths, chiropractors, osteopaths, occupational therapists, physical therapists, nurses, dentists, and doctors who manually apply a subtle movement of the spinal and cranial bones in an attempt to bring the central nervous system into harmony. This therapy involves assessing and addressing the movement of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which can be restricted by trauma to the body, such as through falls, accidents, and general nervous tension. By gently working with the spine, the skull and its cranial sutures, diaphragms, and fascia, the restrictions of nerve passages are said to be eased, the movement of CSF through the spinal cord can be optimized, and misaligned bones are said to be restored to their proper position. This therapy is said to be particularly useful for mental stress, neck and back pain, migraines, TMJ Syndrome, and for chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia.
